“Dianne Lockhart returns without the shackles ”

The Good Fight picks up a year after The Good Wife ended: Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) loses her entire savings in a Ponzi scheme on the eve of her retirement and is forced to start over at a predominantly Black Chicago law firm.

Christine Baranski is a force. Diane's fury, bewilderment and eventual reinvention anchor every episode, and the show gives her better material than The Good Wife ever did. The supporting bench is deep — Cush Jumbo's Lucca Quinn, Sarah Steele's Marissa, and Audra McDonald's Liz Reddick all get real storylines rather than filler.

The show is also fearless. It takes on Trump-era politics, fake news, race in the legal system and cancel culture head-on, sometimes brilliantly. When it lands — the animated explainer segments, the musical episodes, Diane's microdosing arc — it's unlike anything else on TV.

It does suffer with a few main character exits in the first couple of seasons, but Baranski ensures we don’t miss those characters with her stellar performance.

This show is like the cable version of The Good Wife, no commercial shackles holding it back. Baranski's Diane Lockhart is one of the great TV characters.
