Ransom Canyon wants to be your next cosy Texas obsession, and honestly, it has the ingredients: sweeping ranch country, a brooding widower, a childhood friend with unfinished business, and a land dispute that everyone treats like a matter of life and death. On paper, it is exactly the sort of thing you settle into on a Sunday.

In practice, it is comfortable to the point of sleepy. Every beat lands where you expect it to land — the misunderstanding, the rainstorm, the almost-kiss interrupted by a phone call.

The supporting storylines are where it briefly wakes up: the younger characters get the sharper dialogue, and a couple of the family secrets have real teeth. Unfortunately they are parcelled out so slowly that the momentum drains between episodes.

I wanted to love it. Instead I liked it politely, the way you like a nice hotel. Nothing here is groundbreaking, but if you want pretty people being sad on horseback, it will do the job.
