Physical

“Darkly funny 80s aerobics drama”
Physical is Apple TV+'s pitch-black comedy about Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne), a 1980s San Diego housewife whose quietly miserable life — a philandering husband, a vicious inner monologue, a secret eating disorder — cracks open when she discovers aerobics.
Rose Byrne is extraordinary. Sheila's voiceover is one of the nastiest, funniest devices on television — a constant stream of self-loathing delivered while she smiles politely at dinner parties. Byrne plays the split between outer composure and inner chaos so precisely it's almost uncomfortable to watch. The 80s production design is impeccable without ever feeling like a nostalgia reel.
The aerobics angle is inspired. Watching Sheila discover VHS workout tapes — and slowly realise she could build an empire out of them — gives the show a genuine engine. By the later seasons, the show becomes a sharp story about female ambition in an era that punished it.
The show never quite decides how dark it wants to be. The eating-disorder material is handled seriously, but it sits awkwardly next to broader comedy beats, and some supporting characters (Sheila's husband Danny especially) are more irritating than interesting.
Worth watching for Byrne alone — a career-best performance in a show that's very good rather than great.
