Death by Fame goes behind the scenes of Hollywood murders, promising the sinister stories behind the rise, fall and murder of some of the industry's most promising stars. Promising being the operative word — for a lot of these cases, the term fame should be used very loosely.

The show is anchored by a talking-head attorney who narrates each case with full theatrical flourish, telling the stories of stars she has quite obviously never heard of. The dramatic pauses, the eyebrow raises, the "and that's when everything went wrong" — it is a lot. It is also, somehow, exactly what you want from an Investigation Discovery true crime show.

The cases themselves are the real draw. Yes, some of the "stars" are people you will struggle to place, but the stories behind their deaths are genuinely gripping — stalkers, obsessed fans, jealous partners and the dark side of chasing the spotlight. Each 43-minute episode moves briskly and never outstays its welcome.

Is it reinventing the true crime wheel? Absolutely not. But as a dependable, well-paced watch with a host who commits fully to the bit, Death by Fame is a good solid watch — just calibrate your expectations on the word "fame".
