Bad Vegan tells the story of Sarma Melngailis, the woman behind New York's buzziest raw-vegan restaurant, and Anthony Strangis, the man who convinced her he could make her dog immortal if she just kept wiring him money. That sentence is not a joke and it is not the strangest thing in this series.

The con is so absurd that the documentary is forced to take Sarma seriously, and that is where it gets good. The archive material — texts, voice notes, staff interviews — builds a genuinely uncomfortable picture of coercive control dressed up as spiritual testing. The employees who went unpaid while all this happened are given real space.

The final episode wants a neat resolution the story cannot provide, and Sarma's own framing goes unchallenged more often than it should.
